Email Tip - photo found showing KL at start of 2010 Vermont City Marathon

UPDATE 9/28/12
Received an email from tipster w/ photo of KL at start of 2010 Vermont City Marathon (a suspicious performance on the interactive race map).
Recall Vermont City was a race where race staff were suspicious of the performance, but did not feel that they had enough evidence for the DQ (see note from the Technical Director of 2010 Vermont City Marathon)
START photo

FINISH photo - NOTE that the sign says 2:53, but he actually "ran" 2:49 because of the absurd chip/gun differential
KEY SUSPICIONS:
  • Bib Covered
  • Changed shorts
  • Took 4 minutes, 34 seconds to cross the starting line yet finished 41st overall in a race with 2895 finishers
  • Results can be found here: http://www.coolrunning.com/results/10/vt/May30_22ndKe_set1.shtml
  • Split the first 10 miles in 63:21 (6:20/mile). Would be difficult if not impossible to do starting 4 minutes, 34 seconds after the gun went off. Tons of people in the way -
  • Expect to see Kip at about 6 minutes into the video. Does it look like he could run 6:20/mile through all those people? Email tipster believes you can see him at 6:17-6:18 if you look closely: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YoKAbUJmyAQ
  • Split the final 10K in 38:23 (6:11/mi pace).

Kip's SPLITS Broken Down
-10 miles in 1:03:21 (6:20/mi)
-10 miles to 13.1 miles in 20:01 (6:27/mi)
-13.1 miles to 20 miles in 47:17 (6:51/mi)
-20 miles to 26.2 miles in 38:23 (6:11/mi)

Subject: found pic of KL at start of VT marathon

fyi I browsed through 25000 photos so far and I found Kip at the start of the VT City Marathon, 2010.

Here are the photos of him if you search by bib number

If you go to the event home and select photo browser

put in the options
start with photo 24817 and show 48 then hit go

Look at the photo 5 rows down in the 1st (left) column.  There is KL with the same hat, shades on the hat, same watch, different shorts, and a blue shirt over his red singlet and of course his bib is not visible, presumable under the blue shirt.  Note this pic seems to be near the back of the pack crossing the start line.

I will browse through the pics again looking for him with the blue shirt on.  I did not see any pics of him in the red singlet on the stretches of the race through the city streets where I saw other competitors multiple times from multiple angles.

Not sure how interesting this pic is, all it shows is he did cross the start line which is nothing new.  It is consistent with his MO where he starts at the back of the pack with his bib obscured.

Sincerely,

Subject: KL in start of VT marathon video

Hello again.  Based on the picture I found of KL at the start of VT city 2010 I looked at the youtube video on your blog.  I think you can see KL in the video.  A person wearing an outfit that looks identical to the pic mentioned below can be seen starting at 6:17-6:18 in the video.  He comes around the corner and runs down the right hand side of the crowd as we view the video.  This is consistent with the picture of found of KL near the start as it is taken from the right hand side as the runners are coming toward the photographer.

I find it odd in the video that he is ahead of the 2 runners in army fatigues wearing backpacks and seems to be pulling ahead of them.  In the picture of KL he is just ahead of the 2 army fatigue guys and a woman in a white sports bra.  In the video you see the woman in white bra a little behind KL and then the 2 army guys are bringing up the rear.  One other person who stands out in the video is a woman with an orange top and pink shorts with a black arm band on her left arm.  In the video she is a ways ahead of KL but she also hugs the extreme right hand side.  She can be seen in the photos, 6 pictures prior to KL.

Perhaps the photo I found was taken a little further down the course from the video and KL is starting to slow down getting ready to drop out of the pack.

  1. Might not be a slam dunk- as you can see at the finish he is carrying what looks like the black shirt that he started in so he could have just peeled it off revealing the red tank. Maybe the same for the shorts

Check out the comments in that Youtube video. The person posting the video says it got compressed a lot when uploading it, and the original is much sharper. I have no doubt that is Kip at 6:18 on the right (I found him years ago when first discussing this race, and that is definitely his stride). Now with the photo, you can even see him carrying something white in his left hand too.

Anyway, it might be worth contacting the guy and seeing if you can acquire a copy of the original video with better resolution. Those splits are such a joke... can't believe the RD won't DQ with all the evidence.

  4. Couldn't find any pictures of KL mid race wearing either outfit. I wonder why?

  5. Kip's family was at most of these races, cheering him on and taking photos. To claim that he cheated could not be more inaccurate. I have talked with them and they have confirmed that he has run legitimately and have many photos backing this. One lousy writer prints something & then people repeat it as though it is true. It is disgusting that people would be so cruel to such an great guy with a great family. If you knew him you would know this is all garbage.

    1. Kip (or a Kip supporter), we all know it's you. Can you refute the evidence on this blog?

      Delete
  6. Yes of course I am a Kip supporter, because unlike everyone behind this smear, I actually know him and his family. Refuting this trash is easy, just ask any of his family, who were actually with him the whole time. Believing those who don't know him over his family and those that know him well is astoundingly short sighted. Get a clue!

Where is the airtight evidence? It appears unlikely you'll ever "get" him at this point. A better strategy would have been to quietly go about the investigation without informing the target. I would certainly have checked into his degrees, marriage, and any other certifications. This behavior is not typically reserved for only one trivial part of someone's life, it pervades their entire existence. But beware when the facade breaks in Litton's mind, as he'll be a suicide threat.

  8. Not only did I read the article, but I have discussed many of it's claims with Kip's family. The author was very adept at using deception and conveniently leaving out facts, like that Kip's family was with him at these races, making it impossible for him to cheat. They confirmed he never had access to a car, bike or any other method of cheating. They also confirmed that the Wyoming race was NOT fictitious just because he ran alone. I saw emails proving that the author refused to talk to his family- what an unethical deviant! Most people that know Kip realize these accusations couldn't be true and that the the author must have been loose with the facts.

SKip- All aspects of Kip & his family were thoroughly investigated going years back, and no wrongdoing of any kind was found. He has been a model citizen and consummate professional for 20 years. Your amateur pycho-analysis is a joke!

If Kip ran Wyoming alone, then why are there other finishers that are fake names listed on the website? Is Kip good enough to run sub3hrs alone in the middle of Wyoming?

This is a simple attempt on Kip's (or Kip's family's) part to make the evidence look controversial.
He may appear on the surface to be normal and he probably is - after all, he has no police record or any record of any criminal wrongdoings. Basically he's most likely just a small town DDS guy who tried to puff himself up from 2009-2010 by finishing sub3hrs in lots of marathons in all 50 states. Problem is of course that he cheated!!! It's very embarrassing for him. He went to pretty good lengths to do these things, and he figured no one would notice. But Kip got lazy with his cheating efforts in mid 2010, & race directors who had already disqualified him finally started a thread on the elite running message board site, letsrun.com.

Then the game changed. it was getting lots of attention. Kip was now on the radar screen and could no longer hide his activities. Suddenly in late 2010, visitors to the message board letsrun.com recognized Kip in their own area and started noticing. Within a short time, Kip started taking down worldrecordrun.com & the "official" West Wyoming Marathon website, Sandy Springs Half Marathon website, & Pine Hills 5k website. These races were all found to be made up and hosted on the same IP address as Kip's dental practice website. In early 2011, Numerous letsrun.com visitors did some detective work of their own and all went back to official race websites of marathons that Kip had claimed to have run and looked at his race photographs which were/are available publicly because they are posted for customers to buy.

My guess is that Kip will keep posting comments anonymously here for "damage control," even though the damage has been done. I wish him well.

    3. You say that his family was with him at these races. Are you saying that they also ran sub 3-hour marathons? If they didn't, then they weren't observing him the whole time, and can't claim he didn't cheat.

As far as not having access to a bike, I don't know how you can "confirm" this. You can get a cheap bike at Walmart for 200-300 dollars. And even without a bike, you don't need extra equipment to cheat. Any course that crosses back on itself or turns(Boston being the exception) allows for cheating if the person simply cuts the course.

Finally, it's KIP that the author wanted to talk to, not his family. Why would he want to talk to a secondary source when he could get his information directly from Kip? How is it possible that his family could have information about Kip's race that Kip would not know? And if it's not possible, then why would he want to talk to someone who has LESS information?

      Delete
    4. Mr. Gellar- you are a prime example of why this fabricated story has perpetuated. All of his family has confirmed that he never had access to a bike or car at any race. They dropped him off at the start, provided nourishment, collected his shed clothes and took pictures along the way. If you bothered to talk to them they would assure you that there was NO WAY he could have cheated. His family provided valuable witness info that would have destroyed Singer's bullshit story, so he purposely avoided talking to them. Boston is NOT the only exception, many of the races are point to point or have blocked access on/off the courses. Many others came forward after the article to say that he could not have cheated. Get a clue and stop spreading lies.

      Delete
    5. Can you please explain the following:

Kip changing shirts during all of his races?
Kip changing shorts during all of his races?
Kip changing shoes and socks during all of his races?
Kip hiding his bib during all of his races?
Kip starting all of his races five minutes late?
Kip making up websites and faking results for non-existent races?
Kip's failure to address any of these points, ever?

      Delete
    6. And you still haven't answered my questions. My first one was " Are you saying that they also ran sub 3-hour marathons? If they didn't, then they weren't observing him the whole time, and can't claim he didn't cheat." And this still stands. If they weren't with him, then how can they confirm he didn't cheat? The only response you've given is, essentially, "they confirmed that."

As for the author not talking to Kip's family, I repeat again my question of how talking to someone who knew LESS about Kip's races than he did could possible reveal MORE information? Your response, again, is just "they have that information."

As for the pictures, unofficial pictures could actually have merit if they have Kip running alongside someone else from that race. But since Kip took pains to be far out in front, it's likely that whatever pictures just show him running . . . somewhere. As far as proof, they'd be useless. If my time in a marathon is 3:15, but I have a friend who timed me at 2:58, who would YOU believe?

Finally, as for course being point to point or blocked access: Point to points are rare because they take up more room and can't serve as qualifiers for Boston or NY. And I have NEVER run a marathon (including Boston, except for the last couple of miles) that was blocked off to pedestrians. Vehicular traffic, yes. But ANYONE can walk in and out of the course.

      Delete
  9. Give it up, Kip, you are too obvious, much like your marathon cheating methods. But while you're paying attention, I gotta ask again why? What were you trying to gain? If it was notoriety, you weren't going to get much by faking a dozen sub three hour finishes per year. Good accomplishment (when it's actually real), but your name wasn't exactly going to be carved in granite in the pantheon of greats. The irony is that had you not been a fraud and run these races legitimately, I wouldn't even know who you are, but because you are such a cheater, I and everyone else in the marathon world knows you and your name will live on forever in infamy, maybe even when names like Rosie Ruiz have found their way into the historical garbage bin. Her stunt was more audacious, but you are a serial cheater. You wanted notoriety and you sure got it.

  10. I read the article and was totally sucked in like most I'm sure. But then when I started asking around (I live in Davison), almost everyone I talked to said this story was just a mean spirited hoax. If this story is true then why do people who know him still respect and admire Kip and steadfastly defend him?

    ReplyDelete
  11. I just found out about this story and am shocked! I attended college with Kip and his now wife. He was an unethical liar then and is the same now. I feel nothing but pity for his poor family, as they are surely victims of his distorted behavior. I also read an article about this incident in which he claims to have never been sued, an utter lie as I know about one lawsuit with which I was personally involved. What a terrible shame to live your life as a cheat and a liar and even more terrible to suck your family into your scams!

    ReplyDelete
  12. After several people, including the author, did a thorough search going back to 1980, it was found that there was no record whatsoever of any legal action, lawsuits or malpractice cases against Kip Litton. If you wish to bash him, you will have to make up some other kind of dirt that can't be so easily disproven.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'm not trying to "bash" him and I'm not making up "dirt". I can't speak to why this lawsuit was not revealed through the public records but there was a default judgment taken against him and I was involved in the successful collection efforts. I don't want to be more specific about the county in which this was filed or the nature of the case but it took place in the mid-80's (it was before he graduated from dental school and was not a malpractice action). He was a liar then and is a liar now. During the collection proceedings, he claimed poverty in order to reduce the amount he should pay and then I discovered he had just gotten a Porsche. His lawyer in the matter was later disbarred.

      Delete
  13. You ARE trying to bash him (by calling him a liar, unethical & a cheat). If there is no record, then it DIDN'T happen. I have known Kip & Lisa for years. You do NOT know Lisa, because she has assured everyone she knows that Kip did not cheat. She should know, she was there. Even if there was some type of incident, you have some SERIOUS mental issues to harbor a grudge over some minor thing for almost 30 years!

    1. It's not a grudge, it's a fact. Calm down.

    2. Different "anonymous" here, but why the heck wouldn't you "be more specific about the county in which this was filed or the nature of the case"???? If this is true, Kip already knows who you are (or at least has narrowed it down if there were multiple people involved).

I am one of Kip's critics, and it's obvious he is a repeat cheat in most every race he "ran" over several years... and I'd guess he has cheated in other areas of his life, but to throw out the claims you are, and not give anything else for others to verify, is very questionable.

I'm open to any explanation why you wouldn't provide the county or nature of the case. Can't think of anything, considering the good dentist would be familiar with the case. So, why won't you?

      Delete
    3. If there is no record, then it didn't happen? That's not exactly true. Records from that time were not computerized, obviously, and so the record keeping from that time could be unreliable. There's no record of Kip crossing the timing mats at various race checkpoints. Following your logic, he wasn't in the race, right??

      Delete
  14. Isn't it obvious to anyone with any intelligence who is reading this that all the accusations, allegations and criticisms of Kip always come from those who do not know him or have any real life credible experience with him, and all those that actually do know him quickly and vehemently defend him and confirm that he has not cheated, and in fact, is a very well-liked stand-up guy with a long track record of integrity and generosity. Come on people, use your head!

    ReplyDelete

    1. Not to me. I just learned of this guy last week, and its obvious to me he cheats. Missing splits, missing photos, changing clothes and frequent "accidental" course cuts point to a big old cheater. The best part is the fictional Wyoming marathon! I think I will run my own marathon tonight and get a sub-2. Its not my fault just me and my dog showed up...
The most telling point is that he could never repeat a sub-3 performance while being monitored. You'd think he would be eager to prove his ability and would offer to run with anyone that could keep up.

      Delete
    2. You have not read the totality of the posts - so many people who know him personally have questioned his veracity and stated their belief in his cheating ways. The posts defending him seem to come mostly from first time posters who are probably Kip himself or his small (very small!) group of loyal defenders. You can't blame his family for not wanting to out him but they surely know his true character.

      Delete
    3. After wading through all these claims, I was saddened that I had to talk to many in our community about all this. I was quite relieved to discover that NONE of these ridiculous cheating claims turned out to be true. This is one of the worst rumors spun out of control ever. Sad.

      Delete
    4. How did you discover the claims weren't true? Everything points to the exact opposite.

      Delete
    5. I simply did what none of these nay-sayers has done- I talked to his training partners who confirmed that he was easily capable of his credited race finish results. Also, the people who were with him at all these races indicated that at no time could he have cheated and that they actually saw him at various points along the courses. In NONE of his hundreds of races has even one person said they saw him cheat. Case closed.

      Delete
    6. Kip, you've got to give it up with your excuses. You cheated. Please stop coming on here to make things up.

      Delete
  15. Oh, its obvious to a uninformed random like you, who somehow knows MORE than all the people who were with Kip when he ran these races and confirmed that he DIDN'T cheat?? Get your facts straight. He ran 4 sub-3 marathons after the bogus accusations arose & being monitored. He also ran 200 other races including 8 Boston Marathons without a DQ or even a single hater saying they saw him cheat!! I have even more respect for Kip now than before, for standing tall against these haters.
