  1. He is actually wearing a different pair of shoes it looks like. It looks like there was a ballcap change and the socks got pulled up...

  2. In my opinion he is looking back for a "marker", he's judging when he should cross the timing may based off another person's pace. If he enters the race at this point it would be tough to know exactly when to cross the mat and not have the split time be questioned, so he is using someone else as his gauge, someone who he knows will be running a 3:00 marathon. Has anyone ever checked to see if he is consistently finishing in the general neighborhood of the same person at all of these different races?

    1. I'm not sure what you mean. I think Kip waited for the last of the walkers to cross the starting line before he crossed the starting line ....in a joggers outfit (baggy black raincoat top). This way his sub3hr competitors won't notice him when he changes outfits (including shoes) and crosses the line as one of the top finishers -> 3rd overall in this race.

  3. Is it just me, or do the other runners in the pictures not look like "typical" 3 hour marathoners?

    1. Of course the runners at the start do not look like 3 hour (or sub 3hr) marathoners. After the starting timer went off, Kip lined up behind almost everyone wearing a baggy black raincoat. Somehow Kip appeared near the finish with a t-shirt on and different shoes and crossed the finish line for 3rd place overall.

In the New Yorker article, it mentions this course is a trail marathon where the trail isn't more than 6ft wide and a top finisher did not recall ever seeing Kip pass him.
